Leicestershire Big Switch Off Campaign
This week saw the Big Switch Off campaign hit Leicestershire and Rutland. The energy efficiency campaign encourages both businesses and non-businesses to switch off unnecessary electrical equipment and lighting to save energy and cut CO2 emissions.
“Everyone has a part to play in the Big Switch Off,” says local serial entrepreneur Michael Cheung of DVD Blu-ray Duplication. “The Energy Saving Trust suggests that over £1 billion worth of energy is wasted by leaving appliances on standby and the Carbon Trust estimates that around 60% of energy, amounting to a staggering £180 million, is wasted by office equipment left on standby. The Big Switch Off aims to address this issue and encourage local organisations and households to reduce their energy use and ultimately their costs.”

Shell Step Local Finals
After a wonderful celebration night at the Local Shell Step Finals, for Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, a winner was selected to proceed to the next round of heats.
The competition from the top 3 was of excellent quality which made judging very difficult. But after much deliberation and cogitation, we would like to congratulate Lisa Hayward on winning the local awards.
Lisa produced and showed great enterprise and showed progression during her work placement at her employers Asset Skills. On top of this, Lisa also managed to get her employer the government standard which they were looking to receive to enable them to move forward with the organisation and expand further afield.

Shell Step 2009 at the University of Leicester
It’s the time of year where Michael is busily involved with a local University, this time at University of Leicester on the 1st and the 21st September. Michael is a judge for the 4th year running for the Shell Step Programme where enterprisi ng students present their 12 week Summer work placement to a panel of judges showing how they have improve the company which they have worked for.
Michael was once a joint first Shell Step student himself back quite a few years now, and will understand what the students are going through. Not only do you work for up to 12 weeks in a project that you are interested in during university study, at the end, you have to write a concise report and present to a panel of judges. If you win round one, the students go through round two with the possibility of winning to go through to the national Final.

twitter is over capacity
Having recently updated our Twitter page this morning, I went back on it again just before lunch and there was an interesting surge of online twitters, twittering away on the site.
I wonder why the overload?
Mind you it is half term break and unless that was an online attack or just that time during the week that caused this interesting screen to appear. At least this is better than a 404 or 500 web page warning which means nothing to most online users.
Interesting, this page appeared – see screen shot below:
