Getting In Step for the ‘Shell Step Finals’

The first week in September will see some keen students head back early to University. Why you may ask? They are not only keen to start the new year but are taking part in the Shell Step Finals taking place up and down the country.

Shell Step is a programme designed to help SME’s develop by kick-starting and managing new projects, and to give enterprising students work experience within their areas of interest by employing them for summer project placements.

Michael Cheung, Creative Director of Michael Associates, a new media company based in Leicester, and a winning Shell Step student himself back in 1999, will be one of the judges at this year’s Shell Step local final being held at Lincoln University on the 4th September, where students will be expected to submit a report and deliver a presentation on their summer projects, before being quizzed by a panel of judges. The winning students can look forward to attending the regional and possibly the National Final, later in the year.

This will be the third year Michael has taken a seat on the judging panel. When asked about the programme Michael said, “I think Shell Step is a fantastic programme for students and businesses alike. I’m always impressed by the quality of work undertaken by the students and the benefits they provide to their host companies. From the students entries it can be clearly seen that the experience they have gained will help shape their future careers, and the quality of their work is backed up by the fact that many students stay in contact with their host company’s, often working for them part time throughout their final year at University, or going on to join the company after they have completed their course. I’m looking forward to this year’s judging process, and wish all those taking part the best of luck.”
